INTERVIEW ASHOK KATHPAL, M.D. JAIVIC CAPACITOR,
By, Magazine Electric & Power info.
We have most advanced & sophisticated machineries at all stages of manufacturing. We have totally automatic winding machine, ultra modern, TCW, DCW winding machine
Also discuss the broad role played by a power capacitor in an electrical circuit.
Capacitor is the most important product in energy conservation because cost of energy for industrial production is reflected in cost of goods or product. It is in the interest of all, particularly those engaged in any capacity in production to save energy as much as possible.
Please tell us more about your Nasik manufacturing facility (in terms of key infrastructure, product range, etc.) and discuss expansion plans if any.
We have most advanced & sophisticated machineries at all stages of manufacturing. We have “METAR”, a Swiss make totally automatic winding machine, ultra modern, TCW, DCW winding machines. We have special machine for winding big diameter capacitor elements, we have modern Zinc Spray system with latest technology, Dust proof rooms for APP winding & all process, testing lab for R&D & testing.
Please discuss in general terms the meaning of power factor and why a power factor of less than unity implies inefficiency in an electrical circuit.
Power factor means the ratio of useful power to apparent power. It should be noted that actual power consumed is lower than the apparent power.
If the P. F. is less than unity, we are wasting energy due to which We have to pay penalty to Electricity Distribution Authority. Apart from penalty We are loosing Incentive given by Electricity Distribution Authority. We also have unnecessary excess billing for the energy which is not used by us.
The advantage of a better P. F. are multifold & all results in substantial economy in the operator of electrical installation by cutting down penalties for excessive consumption of reactive energy, reducing line losses, increasing power carrying capacity, increasing power available at supply transformer.
‘Jaivic is having larger dealer, distributor network all over India. Considering increased customer demand, Jaivic has planned to expand its capacity this year. We have already started redesigning our factory layout and quality systems as per international standards’
Ashok M. Kathpal,MD, Jaivic Electromech Engineering Pvt Ltd.
Given that power utilities are imposing Penalties on (industrial) consumers maintaining poor power factor, how do you see the demand for power factor correction solutions?
Demand for P.F. correction solutions is being increasing day by day because of power crises, consumer awareness, penalties by power utilities & benefits of good P.F.
Which consumer industries are the biggest demand drivers for PFC solutions?
Electricity Boards, Steel Plants, Cement Plants, Auto Industries, Software Industries, Big commercial Malls, Railways, Govt Authorities, Sugar factories are the biggest demand drivers for PFC solutions.
Residential consumers also use inductive –load appliances that may cause low PF ratio. Do you see the scope for PFC solutions here?
Residential consumers can also use capacitors to improve P.F. as there are pumpsets for water lifting, Lifts & many tube lights in multi storied buildings.
Do you feel that consumers that maintain a high power factor ratio should be offered incentives?
Consumers who maintains P.F. of above 0.95 should get substantial incentives so as to motivate them in ‘POWER SAVED IS POWER GENERATED’ programme of our nation.
Please discuss APFC panels made by Jaivic and explain how you work with your clients in designing customized solutions?
Jaivic make APFC panels which are very popular because of its rich experience in P.F. improvement capacitors, customized solutions, energy saving solutions, quality & service and solutions for harmonic reduction.
What are the advantages of using thyristor-based APFC panels when compared with other alternatives?
Advantages of thyristorised APFC are zero voltage switching, fast response, long life, less maintainance, & millions of switching life & noise free operation.
Please tell us more about the R&D set up at Jaivic. Do you face shortage of skilled manpower requirements?
We have our own R&D and Testing lab set up where we analyze product behavior at site conditions such as increase in voltage, current, temperature, failure analysis, product improvement study, material testing etc.
Apart from the fact that low PF is penalized by utilities, do you see a growing awareness of consumers in voluntarily opting for PFC solutions?
Consumer awareness about P.F. improvement has remarkably grown over last few years by knowing importance of capacitors & APFC panels in cutting energy costs.
We observe that some companies are offering integrated solutions for power backup and power conditioning (e.g. UPS/inverter with PF correction, harmonic filter, voltage stabilizer, etc.) Do you see this as an emerging trend?
Yes.
Jaivic has been in the capacitor industry for over three decades. What would you consider as your major achievements and what corporate goals would you like to attain in the medium term?
Jaivic is having large dealer, distributor network all over India. Considering increased customer demand, Jaivic has planned to expand its capacity this year. We have already started redesigning our Factory layout and Quality systems as per international standards.
Corporate goals in a medium term.
From next year Jaivic wants to Export capacitors and APFC panels to different countries.
